Huis Ten Bosch the Haque the Netherlands. Monday 12 August 2013 – Prins Johan Friso Bernhard Christiaan David van Oranje Nassau van Amsberg has died. He was 44 years. He is the younger brother of the new King Willem Alexander and son of Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands.
It comes 18 month after a skiing accident left him in a coma from he never regained. The accident happened during a family holiday in Lech Austria on 17 February 2012.
Prins Friso was burried under an avalanche while skiing off piste. He spent 25 minutes trapped under the snow. He was taken to a hospital in Innsbruck Austria where he was in critical but stable condition. Later he was transported to the Wellington Hospital in London the city where he lived with his wife Mabel Wisse Smit and their two daughters Luana and Zaria.
On the 9 of July 2013 Prins Friso was moved back to Huis Ten Bosch in the Netherlands.
In a statement the government said Prins Friso died from complications that arose as a consequence of the brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation.
He was burried on August 16 in Lage Vuursche near Drakesteyn Castle where he spent his childhood and where Princess Beatrix is returning to live.
The funeral service will be a strictly private one. No other royal families are be able to attend, exception Friso’s godfather King Harold V of Norway.
A ceremony of commemoration will be held later in the Year.
