King Felipe VI took over the Spanish throne after his father King Juan Carlos suddenly abdicated three weeks earlier. Upon swearing an oath to Spain, he told the parliament, “We have a great country, we are a great nation — let us trust in it.” He then paid tribute to his father and thanked his mother for a lifetime of hard work and devotion to the Spanish people.
Unfortunately, the ceremonies coincided with the elimination of Spain from the World Cup. After dominating the European tournaments and arriving in Brazil as defending champions, Spain fell to Chile 2-0.
